Yahoo! Mail Beta meets Yahoo! Messenger

I just posted over on the Yahoo! Mail updates blog regarding the new Messenger integration in Yahoo! Mail Beta. This was pretty cool because I did my first screencast for the blog. I had fun, although trying to come up with a scenario that doesn’t sound totally contrived is difficult (as evidenced by my performance). I’m looking forward to doing more screencasts, though. Using a trial of Camtasia I found out why it’s $300: the video editing capabilities. It’s not the most full-featured video editor, but it’s pretty damn simple to use. So I’ll be requesting that the company pony up the $300 so I can do more screencasts (I would have paid anyway, otherwise I’d feel bad about using a trial for a commercial screencast).

Anyway, I’m embedding the screencast below.

Wow - nice integration. Great screencast as well - you’ve got a good voice for this :)

Hey - the comments are still turned off on the Y Mail beta blog - what’s up with that?

  2. Ryan Says:

Hey, thanks Toni! Always good to hear a couple of compliments when you try something for the first time. ;)

Yeah, yeah…I’m only *ONE MAN* Toni. :P One man with 250,000,000 users. As soon as I unbury myself from the mountain of crap I’ve got going on right now, I’ll look into comments.

    The integration is fantastic. Congrats!

What software did you use to produce the screencast?

  7. Ryan Says:

Brian, I used the excellent Camtasia to produce the screencast. At first I was a bit appalled that they charge $300 for it. But once you get into it and see all of the video editing you can do inside of the Camtasia Studio, you’ll see that $300 is probably worth it if you’re doing any serious amount of screencasting.

All of those zoom effects where I focus in on something are pure Camtasia bliss.

  8. Ryan Says:

Man, two compliments on my voice. Dig it! :)

When is the rest of the Yahoo! suite going to be updated? Yahoo Mail is now in the new century, but contacts, calendar, and tasks is a decade behind….

  11. Standard Deviations » Nice integration of IM into Yahoo Mail Says:

[...] I saw that the new Yahoo Mail had integrated IM functionality and thought, well, that’s nice. This morning I tried it and I have to say it’s actually quite useful. [...]

  12. Luke Says:

Cool intergration of IM into Yahoo Mail although would like to see the option of being able to save chats to e-mail or notes.

Also is there any plans at Yahoo to create a e-mail notifier similar to gmail notifer for pc&mac. This would be great as I don’t need stand alone Yahoo Messenger now with the IE intergration but would still like to know when my a Yahoo e-mails arrives.

  33. Rajagopal Says:

I got Yahoo IM integrated to my Mail. But I’m unable to connect to my IM. I get the following error.

You have been disconnected from chat because you may be experiencing network connection problems. To reconnect. please select Available, Busy, or invisible from the chat status menu.

I tried it on both Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Linux and Opera 9.20 on Linux. But it doesnt seem to connect. While I can very well login to Yahoo thru my Gaim. I can also login and use Yahoo webmessenger available at webmessenger.yahoo.com

And one more thing i wanted to show you. On opera, the alignment of the status menu is not proper. Please take a look at this screenshot of it.

From what I could see from your screencast, its superb, and I’m longing to have it working for me :)

  34. Ryan Says:

I’m not sure why you’re unable to connect through the integrated Messenger. The Opera issue, however, is probably due to the fact that Opera is still unsupported on Yahoo! Mail Beta.

  35. Joe Beaulaurier Says:

This is great and I’m looking forward to when this comes with a message archive/history capability. I’m hoping it’s on it’s way as YIM “for the Web” provides for archiving. Until then I’m going to have to use email and/or YIM.

  36. Kay Says:

I am getting tired with the latest problems with the new Yahoo Mail Beta and that is not being able to access my mail inbox (blank pages on both IE and Firefox).
At first I thought it was a good product but now after spending several days contacting customer support by email and phone, only to have the problem fixed for a short while and then reoccur a few weeks later. I have lost all hope that Yahoo would get their act together. I am even thinking of canceling all my Premium services because of this.
Poor customer support = Loss of customers
Too many problems with the new product, sorry.
