Messenger and Mail, sitting in a tree…

Ethan gave a demo of some a new feature coming in Yahoo! Mail Beta today at the Web 2.0 conference: Yahoo! Messenger integration. It’s pretty sweet, you can do messenger in your browser and, better yet, you can quickly switch context between IM conversations and email. Here’s some links to coverage that’s been going on:

I’m going to post about this on the ymailupdates.com blog next week. I’d do it sooner but I get on a plane tomorrow to head to India, so I’ll be out of touch with the world for 24 hours or so.

UPDATE: Some love from Reuters as well.

    Hi

Thanks for leaving the comment on my blog http://techtites.com/

It’s not everyday that folks from Yahoo! drop by :)

    Greetings,
I noticed you were posting in the comments on the TechCrunch article, and was glad to see you commented on the speed issues (which are bad).

    I’ve Just three questions :

    1) will YIM contiune to be a standalone application?

    2) will we be seeing Opera support? If so, when?

    3) will the old interface be completely done away with at some
point, or will it remain an option?

    Thanks.

Ken, yes, YIM will continue to be a standalone application. As for Opera support, I can’t say. I don’t make those decisions. The old interface, I imagine, will exist in some form for a while. Obviously without 100% browser support in the beta, we need something for people to be able to fall back on. Also, we need a client that works for users who turn off JavaScript.
