I already mentioned I work on the #1 property on the #1 site on the internet. Now we get to stick another trophy up on the mantle: Yahoo! has won the PC Magazine Editor’s Choice Award. Their mail provider comparison chart is a little hard to read, but the top 4 rows (AIM Mail, Google Gmail, MSN Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail) are their reviews from this year (the remaining rows are old reviews). That’s the 4 biggest and most comprehensive webmail products out there today and they determined Y! Mail is tops.
This reminds me of when I started working at Excite back in mid-2000. It was a big deal if you were offering more than 2 MB of storage. Spam filtering and virus scanning was in its infancy. Everything was powered by something (i.e. “Print, powered by HP”). It feels like those times are back now, but the storage is much larger (2GB instead of 2MB), the spam filtering is much more powerful (unfortunately because the spammers are much more crafty) and ads are gradually taking a back seat with some of the providers.
All I can say is, those other 3 providers better kick it in gear because I can assure you that all of us working on Y! Mail have our foot firmly planted on the accelerator and we’re not letting up. Wanna race?
